Variance: A Modern Reinterpretation of Traditional Tile Design

Berk Aril's Award-Winning Design Breathes New Life into Classic Yeast Patterns

Berk Aril's inspiration for 'Variance' came from the idea of reprocessing frequently used yeast patterns in a more modern perception. The design brings together different wholes with its structure that can be a continuation of each other. The reinterpretation of the old is the source of inspiration, resulting in a design that is both familiar and fresh.

The unique properties of 'Variance' lie in the cubic complementarity created by three different line intensities with varying density and sparsity. The figures, which can be used in different combinations, create a sense of depth thanks to their non-repeating continuity. The concave and polished lines on the tile provide different tones of visuality according to the density of the light.

The tiles are shaped using the press method and completed with baking after coloring. The technical specifications of the design are 90*30cm, making them versatile for a variety of spaces. The design tags include Ceramic, Tiles, Light, Variance, Design, indicating the key elements of the design.

The design was created in Istanbul, with the project starting in October 2016 and finishing in February 2016. The underlying research for the design was focused on yeast patterns, which have been repeatedly used for years in carpets, mosaics, and tiles. The goal was to bring a new interpretation and interpret them with a different perception.

The main challenge in creating 'Variance' was presenting a different perception and approach in the tried works. These patterns, which have been frequently used, have found their most beautiful and ascetic forms over the years. However, Aril was able to overcome this challenge and create a design that is both innovative and respectful of tradition.

'Variance' was awarded Silver in the A' Building Materials and Construction Components Design Award in 2017. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. 'Variance' is indeed a design that introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
